The goal of Head Start is to help children gain the skills and confidence necessary to succeed in their early years, and later in school and in life. Head Start’s Education and Early Childhood Development Services offer children a wide range of learning experiences using strategies such as experimentation, inquiry, observation, play and exploration. Through a balanced daily program of child initiated and adult directed activities, children develop trust, independence, self control and respect for themselves and others as they play with and learn from a wide variety of developmentally appropriate educational materials. Each child has a written plan that is developed by the teacher and the parent, and is based on ongoing observation of each child’s progress over time. The Head Start program recognizes that children have individual rates of development as well as individual interests, temperaments, languages, cultural backgrounds and learning styles. Head Start is inclusive of children with disabilities and provides services that are consistent with their Individual Family Service Plans (IFSPs) or Individual Education Programs (IEPs).
